Serendipity

Serendipity (pronounced ser-uhn-dip-i-tee)

(1) The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident; a combination of events which have come together by chance to make a surprisingly good or wonderful outcome.

(2) Luck, good fortune.

(3) As the serendipity berry (Dioscoreophyllum volkensii), a tropical dioecious rainforest vine in the family Menispermaceae, native to tropical Africa from Sierra Leone east to Eritrea, and south to Angola and Mozambique.

1754: The construct was Serendip + -ity.  The proper noun Serendip (Serendib the alternative form) was an archaic name for the island of Ceylon (सिंहल (sihala (Sri Lanka”) after 1972 from द्वीप (dvīpa) (island)), from the Arabic سَرَنْدِيب‎ (sarandīb), from the Persian سرندیپ (sarandip), from the Prakrit sīhaladīva & Sanskrit सिंहलद्वीप (sihaladvīpa (literally “island of the Sinhala people”)).  The –ity suffix was from the French -ité, from the Middle French -ité, from the Old French –ete & -eteit (-ity), from the Latin -itātem, from -itās, from the primitive Indo-European suffix –it.  It was cognate with the Gothic –iþa (-th), the Old High German -ida (-th) and the Old English -þo, -þu & (-th).  It was used to form nouns from adjectives (especially abstract nouns), thus most often associated with nouns referring to the state, property, or quality of conforming to the adjective's description.

The serendipity berry is noted as a source of monellin, an intensely sweet protein and if chewed, alters the perception of taste to make tart, acidic or bitter food taste sweet.  Pills containing synthesized monellin are sold as “miracle fruit tablets” for this purpose (a lemon eaten after sucking on one of these tablets quite a revelation) and as “miracle fruit”, serendipity and related berries are widely used in African folk medicine although there’s scant evidence for their efficacy as a treatment for the many diseases they’re said to cure.  Words with a similar meaning include fluke, happenstance, blessing, break and luck but serendipity carries the particular sense of something very useful and wholly unexpected being the result while The phrases “Murphy's law” & “perfect storm” are close to being antonyms.  In science and industry, serendipity has played a part in the discovery or development of vaccination, insulin to treat diabetes, penicillin, quinine, Viagra, x-rays, radioactivity, pulsars, cosmic microwave background radiation, Teflon, vulcanized rubber, microwave ovens, Velcro and 3M's (originally Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing) post-it notes (though it seems its part in the invention of stainless steel may be a myth).  Serendipity & serendipitist are nouns, serendipitously is an adverb and serendipitous is an adjective; the noun plural is serendipities.  Serendipiter & serendipper are non-standard noun forms adopted in popular culture.

Serendipity was in 1754 coined by the English Whig politician & author writer Horace Walpole (1717–1797), derived from the fairy tale The Three Princes of Serendip, the three, Walpole noted, “always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of”.  The Three Princes of Serendip was an English version of Peregrinaggio di tre giovani figliuoli del re di Serendippo, printed in 1557 by Venetian publisher Michele Tramezzino (1526-1571), the text said to have been the work of a Cristoforo Armeno who had translated the Persian fairy tale into Italian, adapting Book One of Amir Khusrau's Hasht-Bihisht (1302). The story was translated into French before the first English edition was published and Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet, 1694–1778) used the tale in his 1797 novella Zadig ou la Destinée (Zadig or The Book of Fate), an intriguing fusion of fiction and philosophy which influenced systematic science, the evolution of creative writing about crime and even horror stories.

Walpole used serendipity first in a letter (dated 28 January 1754) he wrote to Florence-based British diplomat Sir Horace Mann (1706–1786) but which seems not to have been published until 1833, the new word remaining almost unnoticed until the 1870s when there was a brief spike; it was in the early-mid twentieth century it became popular and until then it was rare to find a dictionary entry although the adjective serendipitous appeared as early as 1914.  Walpole was compelled to coin serendipity to illustrate his delighted surprise at finding a detail in a painting of Bianca Cappello (1548–1587 and latterly of the clan Medici) by Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574).  The charm of the word is such that it’s been borrowed, unaltered, by many languages and it frequently appears in "favorite word" or "words of the year" lists.

The twenty-two-year-old Walpole fell under the charm of the long dead Bianca Cappello while staying in Florence during his grand tour of the continent.  Besotted by the portrait of the peach-skinned Venetian beauty which hung in the Casa Vitelli, it's not clear what immediately drew his eye but a diary note by the French writer Montaigne (1533–1592), who in 1580 had the pleasure of meeting her, might provide a hint: “...belle à l’opinion italienne, un visage agréable et imperieux, le corsage gros, et de tetins à leur fouhait” ("...according to the Italians she is beautiful.  She has an agreeable and imposing face, and large breasts, the way they like them here…").  He confided his passion to Mann who around 1753 purchased the work, sending it to his friend who had by then returned to England, his cover letter including the revelatory “It is an old acquaintance of yours, and once much admired by you... it is the portrait you so often went to see in Casa Vitelli of Bianca Capello… to which, as your proxy, I have made love to for a long while… It has hung in my bedchamber and reproached me indeed of infidelity, in depriving you of what I originally designed for you”.  These days, such things are called objectum sexuality or fictosexualism but in the eighteenth century it was just something the English aristocracy did.

Whatever other pleasures the oil on canvas bought him, Walpole must also have devoted some attention to detail for he would soon write back to Mann: “I must tell you a critical discovery of mine a propos in a book of Venetian arms.  There are two coats of Capello… on one of them is added a fleu de luce on a blue ball, which I am persuaded was given to the family by the Grand Duke” (of Medici who was Bianca's second husband (who may have murdered the first)).  Much pleased at having stumbled upon this link between the two families in a book of Venetian heraldry he happened at the time to be reading in the search for suitable emblems with which to adorn the painting's frame, he told his dear friend: “This discovery indeed is almost of that kind which I call SERENDIPITY”.

Combo

Combo (pronounced kom-boh)

(1) In informal use, a small jazz or dance band (as distinct from a big band).

(2) In informal use, many forms of combined items (bundled “meal deals”; products sold with a collection of options offered at a nominal discount against the price calculated on the basis of the extended value etc).

(3) In informal use, to combine.

(4) A sequence of actions combined as one for certain purposes.

(5) In informal use, the combination (the numerical sequence) of a combination lock.

(6) In video gaming, an action composed of a sequence of simpler actions, especially a composite attacking move in a fighting game; two or more game-play elements (characters, items, options etc) which are powerful when used together.

(7) In collectible card games, a strategy under which the objective is to win by playing a specific combination of cards (or similar), usually in a single play.

(8) In historic Australian (derogatory) slang, a white man (1) who lives among Aboriginal people and adopts Aboriginal culture or (2) has entered into an ongoing sexual relationship with an Aboriginal woman or (3) has taken an Aboriginal wife, usually in a common-law marriage (all now archaic).

(9) In computing (in the design of graphical user interfaces (GUI)), in the informal use “combo box” (A GUI widget that is a combination of a dropdown list or list box and a single-line textbox, allowing the user either to type a value directly into the control or choose from the list of existing options).

1924: A clipping of comb(ination) + -o.  Combination (the act of combining, the state of being combined or the result of combining) was from the Middle English combinacioun & combynacyoun, from the Old French combination, from the Late Latin combīnātiō.  The colloquial -o suffix (wino, ammo, combo, kiddo et al) appears widely in English but is most common in Australia where in certain sub-cultures it appears to be obligatory (they have names like Shaneo, Toddo, Wayneo etc).  The first use was of small jazz groups and dance bands and was used to differentiate the smaller ensembles from the then popular “big bands”, the implication also that while combos were often ad-hoc things with the membership varying from evening to evening whereas big bands had a more stable (usually salaried) membership and usually took the name of the band leader.  Combo is a noun, comboing & comboed are verbs and comboable is an adjective; the noun plural is combos or comboes.

Although there was for years in English-speaking markets something of a tendency to call all the Volkswagen Type 2s Kombis, the Kombi was just one configuration in a range which eventually extended beyond a dozen distinct types.  Kombi was a clipping of the German Kombinationskraftwagen (combination motor vehicle), another of those compound nouns at which they excel.  The Kombi coachwork featured side windows and removable seats in the rear compartment, permitting the thing thus to be used either for passengers, freight or a combination of the two.  Other types in the range included pure delivery vans (no rear seats) with a variety of door options, a high-roof version best suited to transporting cargo which was bulky but not especially heavy, pick-ups (Transporters) with either a single or double passenger cabin and the other classic, the Microbus, intended purely for people and thus configured with fixed seats in the rear.  It was the Microbus which made its mark with the US surfing community in the 1960s and it became identified with the counter culture, something perhaps assisted by its large, flat surfaces which lent themselves to the psychedelic paint schemes associated with the era.

The Microbus was also offered (between 1951-1966) in a “Deluxe” version which featured both a folding fabric sunroof and some unusual “skylight” windows which followed the curve of sides of the roof.  Available in 21 & 23 window versions, these are now highly collectable and such is the attraction there’s something of a cottage industry in converting Microbuses to the be-windowed specification but it’s difficult exactly to emulate the originals, the best of which can command several times the price of a fake (a perfectly restored one in 2017 selling at auction in the US for US$302,000).  Such was the susceptibility to rust, the survival rate wasn’t high and many led a hard life when new, popular with the tour guides who would conduct bus-loads of visitors on (slow) tours of the Alps, the sunroof & skylights ideal for gazing at the peaks.  To add to the mood, a dashboard-mounted valve radio was available as an option.  The Microbus Deluxe is actually rarely referred to as such, being almost universally called the “Samba” and the origin of that in uncertain.  One theory is that it’s a borrowing from the Brazilian dance and musical genre that is associated with things lively, colorful, and celebratory, the link being that as well as the sunroof and windows, the Deluxe had more luxurious interior appointments, came usually in bright two-tone paint (other Type 2s were usually more drably finished) and featured lashings of external chrome.  It’s an attractive story but some prefer something more Germanic: Samba as the acronym for the business-like phrase Sonnendach-Ausführung mit besonderem Armaturenbrett (sunroof version with special dashboard).  However it happened, Samba was in colloquial use by at least 1952 and became semi official in 1954 when the distributers in the Netherlands added the word to their brochures.  Production ended in July 1967 after almost 100,000 had been built.

The very existence of the VW Type 2 (the Beetle was the Type 1) was an act of serendipity, one entrepreneurial dealer from the Netherlands in 1947 noting during a visit to the factory the use of a rather cobbled-together “pick-up” based on a Beetle chassis.  With Europe in the throes of post-war rebuilding and so much industrial production still disrupted, there was a shortage of such vehicles and he sketched what would now be called a “forward control van” which the factory agreed to develop.  However, such was the demand for the Beetle that it wasn’t until 1950 than production of the Type 2 began and, despite the legend that the two share underpinnings, that’s only partially true because to gain the necessary strength, a different floor plan was required.  Still, with many mechanical components there was much interchangeably between Types 1 & 2, something which added greatly to its appeal and it was instantly successful the first generation staying in production until 1966 and although in most of the world the classic air-cooled / rear-engine configuration was in subsequent decades replaced, Type 2 in that specification were made in Brazil until 2013 and although demand was still strong and the line was profitable, the country was the last developed market in the world to introduce the safety regulation which had seen the old Kombis go elsewhere extinct.  The South American line had been the last link with the Nazi’s Kdf-Wagen (which became the Beetle, the first prototype of which dated from 1935, renamed to the snappier Volkswagen (literally “people’s car”).  Kdf (Kraft durch Freude, literally “Strength Through Joy” was the Nazi state’s leisure organization which was involved in everything from holiday resorts and cruise liners to the regulation of workplaces (the classic Nazi “carrot & stick” approach) but it was also used as a slogan an in that sense joy was compulsory and the state had ways to punish those not thought sufficiently joyful.

In personal computer hardware, combo devices have existed almost as long as the industry.  When, with rather modest expectations, IBM released the PC-1 in 1981, it was a US$5000 thing which even by the standards of the time was slow and not particularly capable but (1) it was an IBM and that really gave it a legitimacy no other name could and (2) it was delivered with lots of “open architecture” slots which meant third-party manufacturers could (license and royalty-free) produce all sorts of plug-in cards which extended the functionally.  Soon, there were cards offering sound, support for color monitors (IBM liked people to watch acid-green text displays because they thought the PC-1 would be used mostly as a way to hook into their big mainframes), higher definition graphics, additional ports and before long, connections to the various adapters which could be used to connect to networks.  Things advanced rapidly however and before long there were various ways of connecting to stuff and such were the realities of production-line economics that for manufacturers it often made sense to combine different things on the one card.  While for example a manufacturer could offer three different NICs (network interface cards) to support three different connections, what proved most popular was the combo card which included the three most common types.  The approach also suited customers who might want an additional serial & parallel port but found a combo card with both a better deal than buying two cards.  The approach is still followed today by the GPU (graphical processing unit) manufacturers which have at various times offered combo card with ports for VGA (technically “Video Graphics Array” but really long a reference to the pin-layout), HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface), DVI (Digital Video Interface, of which there were many) & DP (DisplayPort).

Just about any combination of stuff can be a combo including mix & match makeup.  Lindsay Lohan also was part of Pepsi’s promotional campaign for a “dirty soda”, a concoction of Pepsi Cola & milk (Pilk), served with cookies; on the internet, opinion was divided.  One of the most prolific users of combo seems to be the fast food industry, a combo meal (there are often variations) two or more components (typically a burger, a soda and fries) bundled at a price lower than purchasing the items separately.  For the industry, the combos are a high profit item because they stimulate demand, increasing volume with only a marginal increase in labour costs.

Before the release of the Barbie movie in July 2023, it had probably never occurred to the industry there would one day be demand for a burger with hot-pink sauce but it’s now at Burger King, available as part of a combo meal.  First to make the Barbie-themed meal available was Burger King Brazil, the combo including a cheeseburger topped with bacon bits and dressed with a hot pink sauce, said to have a “smoky” flavor.  Also included is a pink vanilla milkshake with strawberry Nesquik powder mixed in and when the straw is put in, it’s topped with a pink frosted donut.  Barbie being the star, the side order of “Ken’s potatoes” is just a plain order of fries, a sly nod to the “he’s just Ken” message.

Dot

Dot (pronounced dot)

(1) A small, roundish mark made with or as if with a pen.

(2) A minute or small spot on a surface; speck.

(3) Anything relatively small or speck-like.

(4) A small specimen, section, amount, or portion; a small portion or specimen (the use meaning “a lump or clod” long obsolete).

(5) In grammar, a punctuation mark used to indicate the end of a sentence or an abbreviated part of a word; a full stop; a period.

(6) In the Latin script, a point used as a diacritical mark above or below various letters, as in Ȧ, Ạ, , , Ċ.

(7) In computing, a differentiation point internet addresses etc and in file names a separation device (although historically a marker between the filename and file type when only one dot per name was permitted in early files systems, the best known of which was the 8.3 used by the various iterations of CP/M & DOS (command.com, image.tif, config.sys etc).

(8) In music, a point placed after a note or rest, to indicate that the duration of the note or rest is to be increased one half. A double dot further increases the duration by one half the value of the single dot; a point placed under or over a note to indicate that it is to be played staccato.

(9) In telegraphy. a signal of shorter duration than a dash, used in groups along with groups of dashes (-) and spaces to represent letters, as in Morse code.

(10) In printing, an individual element in a halftone reproduction.

(11) In printing, the mark that appears above the main stem of the letters i, j.

(12) In the sport of cricket, as “dot ball” a delivery not scored from.

(13) In the slang of ballistics as “dotty” (1) buckshot, the projectile from a or shotgun or (2) the weapon itself.

(14) A female given name, a clipping of form of Dorothea or Dorothy.

(15) A contraction in many jurisdictions for Department of Transportation (or Transport).

(16) In mathematics and logic, a symbol (·) indicating multiplication or logical conjunction; an indicator of dot product of vectors: X · Y

(17) In mathematics, the decimal point (.),used for separating the fractional part of a decimal number from the whole part.

(18) In computing and printing, as dot matrix, a reference to the method of assembling shapes by the use of dots (of various shapes) in a given space.  In casual (and commercial) use it was use of impact printers which used a hammer with a dot-shape to strike a ribbon which impacted the paper (or other surface) to produce representations of shapes which could include text.  Technically, laser printers use a dot-matrix in shape formation but the use to describe impact printers caught on and became generic.  The term “dots per inch” (DPI) is a measure of image intensity and a literal measure of the number of dots is an area.  Historically, impact printers were sold on the basis of the number of pins (hammers; typically 9, 18 or 24) in the print head which was indicative of the quality of print although some software could enhance the effect.

(19) In civil law, a woman's dowry.

(20) In video gaming, the abbreviation for “damage over time”, an attack that results in light or moderate damage when it is dealt, but that wounds or weakens the receiving character, who continues to lose health in small increments for a specified period of time, or until healed by a spell or some potion picked up.

(21) To mark with or as if with a dot or dots; to make a dot-like shape.

(22) To stud or diversify with or as if with dots (often in the form “…dotting the landscape…” etc).

(23) To form or cover with dots (such as “the dotted line”).

Pre 1000: It may have been related to the Old English dott (head of a boil) although there’s no evidence of such use in Middle English.  Dottle & dit were both derivative of Old English dyttan (to stop up (and again, probably from dott)) and were cognate with Old High German tutta (nipple), the Norwegian dott and the Dutch dott (lump).  Unfortunately there seems no link between dit and the modern slang zit (pimple), a creation of US English unknown until the 1960s.  The Middle English dot & dotte were from the Old English dott in the de-elaborated sense of “a dot, a point on a surface), from the Proto-West Germanic dott, from the Proto-Germanic duttaz (wisp) and were cognate with the Saterland Frisian Dot & Dotte (a clump), the Dutch dot (lump, knot, clod), the Low German Dutte (a plug) and the Swedish dott (a little heap, bunch, clump).  The use in civil jurisdiction of common law where dot was a reference to “a woman's dowry” dates from the early 1820s and was from the French, from the Latin dōtem, accusative of dōs (dowry) and related to dōtāre (to endow) and dāre to (give).  For technical or descript reasons dot is a modifier or modified as required including centered dot, centred dot, middle dot, polka dot, chroma dot, day dot, dot-com, dot-comer (or dot-commer), dot release and dots per inch (DPI).  The synonyms can (depending on context) include dab, droplet, fleck, speck, pepper, sprinkle, stud, atom, circle, speck, grain, iota, jot, mite, mote, particle, period, pinpoint, point, spot and fragment.  Dot & dotting are nouns & verbs, dotter is a noun, dotlike & dotal are adjectives, dotted is an adjective & verb and dotty is a noun & adjective; the noun plural is dots.

Although in existence for centuries, and revived with the modern meaning (mark) in the early sixteenth century, the word appears not to have been in common use until the eighteenth and in music, the use to mean “point indicating a note is to be lengthened by half” appears by at least 1806.  The use in the Morse code used first on telegraphs dates from 1838 and the phrase “on the dot” (punctual) is documented since 1909 as a in reference to the (sometimes imagined) dots on a clock’s dial face.  In computing, “dot-matrix” (printing and screen display) seems first to have been used in 1975 although the processes referenced had by then been in use for decades.  The terms “dotted line” is documented since the 1690s.  The verb dot (mark with a dot or dots) developed from the noun and emerged in the mid eighteenth century.  The adjective dotty as early as the fourteenth century meant “someone silly” and was from "dotty poll" (dotty head), the first element is from the earlier verb dote.  By 1812 it meant also literally “full of dots” while the use to describe shotguns, their loads and the pattern made on a target was from the early twentieth century.  The word microdot was adopted in 1971 to describe “tiny capsules of Lysergic acid diethylamide" (LSD or “acid”); in the early post-war years (most sources cite 1946) it was used in the espionage community to describe (an extremely reduced photograph able to be disguised as a period dot on a typewritten manuscript.

The polka-dot (a pattern consisting of dots of uniform size and arrangement," especially on fabric) dates from 1844 and was from the French polka, from the German Polka, probably from the Czech polka, (the dance, literally "Polish woman" (Polish Polka), feminine form of Polak (a Pole).  The word might instead be a variant of the Czech půlka (half (půl the truncated version of půlka used in special cases (eg telling the time al la the English “half four”))) a reference to the half-steps of Bohemian peasant dances.  It may even be influenced by or an actual merger of both.  The dance first came into vogue in 1835 in Prague, reaching London in the spring of 1842; Johann Strauss (the younger) wrote many polkas.  Polka was a verb by 1846 as (briefly) was polk; notoriously it’s sometimes mispronounced as poke-a-dot.

In idiomatic use, to “dot one's i's and cross one's t's” is to be meticulous in seeking precision; an attention to even the smallest detail.  To be “on the dot” is to be exactly correct or to have arrived at exactly at the time specified.  The ides of “joining the dots” or “connecting the dots” is to make connections between various pieces of data to produce useful information.  In software, the process is literal in that it refers to the program “learning: how accurately to fill in the missing pieces of information between the data points generated or captured.  “The year dot” is an informal expression which means “as long ago as can be remembered”.  To “sign on the dotted line” is to add one’s signature in the execution of a document (although there may be no actual dotted line on which to sign).

Dots, floating points, the decimal point and the Floating Point Unit (FPU) 

When handling numbers, decimal points (the dot) are of great significance.  In cosmology a tiny difference in values beyond the dot can mean the difference between hitting one’s target and missing by thousands of mile and in finance the placement can dictate the difference between ending up rich or poor.  Vital then although not all were much bothered: when Lord Randolph Churchill (1849–1895) was Chancellor of the Exchequer (1886), he found the decimal point “tiresome”, telling the Treasury officials “those damned dot” were not his concern and according to the mandarins he was inclined to “round up to the nearest thousand or million as the case may be”.  His son (Winston Churchill (1875-1965; UK prime-minister 1940-1945 & 1951-1955) when Chancellor (1924-1929)) paid greater attention to the dots but his term at 11 Downing Street, although longer, remains less well-regarded.

In some (big, small or complex) mathematical computations performed on computers, the placement of the dot is vital.  What are called “floating-point operations” are accomplished using a representation of real numbers which can’t be handled in the usual way; both real numbers, decimals & fractions can be defined or approximated using floating-point representation, the a numerical value represented by (1) a sign, (2) a significand and (3) an exponent.  The sign indicates whether the number is positive or negative, the significand is a representation of the fractional part of the number and the exponent determines the number’s scale.  In computing, the attraction of floating-point representation is that a range of values can be represented with a relatively small number of bits and although the capability of computers has massively increased, so has the ambitions of those performing big, small or complex number calculations so the utility remains important.  At the margins however (very big & very small), the finite precision of traditional computers will inevitably result in “rounding errors” so there can be some degree of uncertainty, something compounded by there being even an “uncertainty about the uncertainty”.  Floating point calculations therefore solve many problems and create others, the core problem being there will be instances where the problems are not apparent.  Opinion seems divided on whether quantum computing will mean the uncertainty will vanish (at least with the very big if not the very small).

In computer hardware, few pieces have so consistently been the source of problems as Floating point units (FPUs), the so-called “math co-processors”.  Co-processors were an inherent part of the world of the mainframes but came to be thought of as something exotic in personal computers (PC) because there was such a focus on the central processing unit (CPU) (8086, 68020, i486 et al) and some co-processors (notably graphical processing units (GPU)) have assumed a cult-like following.  The evolution of the FPU is interesting in that as manufacturing techniques improved they were often integrated into the CPU architecture before again when the PC era began, Intel’s early 808x & 8018x complimented by the optional 8087 FPU, the model replicated by the 80286 & 80287 pairing, the latter continuing for some time as the only available FPU for almost two years after the introduction of the 80386 (later renamed i386DX in an attempt to differential genuine “Intel Inside” silicon from the competition which had taken advantage of the difficulties in trade-marking numbers).  The delay was due to the increasing complexity of FPU designs and flaws were found in the early 387s.

The management of those problems was well-managed by Intel but with the release of the i487 in 1991 they kicked an own goal.  First displayed in 1989, the i486DX had been not only a considerable advance but included an integrated FPU (also with some soon-corrected flaws).  That was good but to grab some of the market share from those making fast 80386DX clones, Intel introduced the i486SX, marketed as a lower-cost chip which was said to be an i486 with a reduced clock speed and without the FPU.  For many users that made sense because anyone doing mostly word processing or other non-number intensive tasks really had little use for the FPU but then Intel introduced the i487SX, a FPU unit which, in the traditional way, plugged into a socket on the system-board (as even them motherboards were coming to be called) al la a 287 or 387.  However, it transpired i487SX was functionally almost identical to an i486DX, the only difference being that when plugged-in, it checked to ensure the original i486SX was still on-board, the reason being Intel wanted to ensure no market for used i486SXs (then selling new for hundreds of dollars) emerged.  To achieve this trick, the socket for the I487 had an additional pin and it was the presence of this which told the system board to disable the i486SX.  The i487SX was not a success and Intel suffered what was coming to be called “reputational damage”.

The i487SX affair was however a soon forgotten minor blip in Intel’s upward path.  In 1994, Intel released the first of the Pentium CPUs all of which were sold with an integrated FPU, establishing what would become Intel’s standard architectural model.  Like the early implementations of the 387 & 487, there were flaws and upon becoming aware of the problem, Intel initiated a rectification programme.  They did not however issue a recall or offer replacements to anyone who had already purchased a flawed Pentium and, after pressure was exerted, undertook to offer replacements only to those users who could establish their pattern of use indicated they would actually be in some way affected.  Because of the nature of the bug, that meant “relatively few”.  The angst however didn’t subside and a comparison was made with a defect in a car which would manifest only if speeds in excess of 125 mph (200 km/h) were sustained for prolonged periods.  Although in that case only “relatively few” might suffer the fault, nobody doubted the manufacturer would be compelled to rectify all examples sold and such was the extent of the reputational damage that Intel was compelled to offer what amounted to a “no questions asked” replacement offer.  The corporation’s handing of the matter has since often been used as a case study in academic institutions by those studying law, marketing, public relations and such.

Confectionery & Confectionary

Confectionery (pronounced kuhn-fek-shuh-ner-ee)

(1) Confections or sweets collectively.

(2) The work or business of a confectioner.

Confectionary (pronounced kuhn-fek-shuh-ner-ee)

(1) A place where confections are kept, made or sold (obsolete except in retro-branding).

(2) A historic alternative spelling of confectionery (obsolete for centuries in this context).

1535–1545: Both words are constructs: confection + -ery or -ary.  Confection was from the Middle English confescioun, from the Old French confeccion, from the Late Latin cōnfectiōnem & cōnfectiōnārius (one who prepares things by means of combining ingredients according to method), (nominative cōnfectiō), from cōnfectus, past participle of conficere (to prepare), that construct being con- (with) + facere (to make, do).  Originally the meaning was "the making by means of ingredients"; the modern sense of "candy or light pastry" becoming predominant only in the early seventeenth century.  The use of confectionery to mean “excessive architectural ornamentation” dates from 1861 and was later used to condemn the excesses of 1950s US automobiles such as the Edsel although the confectionery played little part in its failure.  The adoption of “confected rage” in political discourse to describe "fake outrage" appears to have begun in the 1980s.  The use of confectioneress (a female confectioner; the plural confectioneresses) is dated and now rarely used but does still appear, used apparently as a marketing gimmick including as the trading name of business outlets, their advertising usually featuring much chocolate

The suffix -ery was from the Middle English -erie, from the Anglo-Norman and Old French -erie, a suffix forming abstract nouns.  The suffix first occurs in loans from the Old French into the Middle English, but became productive in English by the sixteenth century, sometimes as a proper combination of -er with “y” (as in bakery or brewery) but also as a single suffix (such as slavery or machinery).  The suffix –ary (of or pertaining to) was a back-formation from unary and similar, from the Latin adjectival suffixes -aris and -arius; appended to many words, often nouns, to make an adjective form and use was not restricted to words of Latin origin.  Confectionery is a noun and confectionary are a nouns & adjectives, confectioner is a noun, confection is a noun & verb and confect & confected are verbs; the nouns plural are confectioneries and confectionaries.

1958 Buick Century Convertible: Laden with chrome and other needless ornamental detail, the 1958 Buicks were actually worse examples of excess than the more expensive Cadillacs of that season.  Although hardly restrained, in 1958 Cadillac laid it on with a smaller trowel than Buick.  Fortunately, 1958 proved "peak confectionery" year for General Motors (GM) although plenty of other excesses lay ahead.
