Deglutition (pronounced dee-gloo-tish-uh)
In physiology, the act or process of
swallowing.
1640-1650: From the French déglutition or the Late Latin dēglūtītiō, from the Latin dēglūtīre & dēgluttīre + -tiō (suffix
forming nouns relating to actions or the results of actions). Dēgluttīre
is derived from dēgluttiō (to swallow
down), the construct being dē- (the
prefix meaning “from, off”) + gluttiō
(to gulp down, swallow) from the primitive Indo-European gwel (throat). The plural is
deglutitions.
Deglutition imminent: Lindsay Lohan eating yogurt.
