Inculcate

Inculcate (pronounced in-kuhl-keyt)

(1) To implant ideas, opinions or concepts in others, usually by forceful or insistent repetition or admonition; persistently to teach.

(2) To cause or influence others to accept an idea or feeling; to induce understanding or a particular sentiment in a person or persons.

1540s: From the Latin inculcātus past participle of inculcāre (to trample, impress, stuff in, force upon) and perfect passive participle of inculcō (impress upon, force upon).  The construct of inculcāre was in- + calcāre (to trample), from calcō (to tread upon), from calx (heel).  The Latin prefix in- was from the Proto-Italic en-, from the primitive Indo-European n̥- (not), the zero-grade form of the negative particle ne (not) and was akin to ne-, nē & nī.  In Modern English it is from the Middle English in-, from Old English in- (in, into), from the Proto-Germanic in, from the primitive Indo-European en.  The meanings in English upon adoption in the mid-sixteenth century (act of impressing upon the mind by repeated admonitions; forcible or persistent teaching) are agreed but some etymologists note the source of the noun inculcation might have been different, coming directly from the Late Latin inculcationem (nominative inculcatio), the noun of action from past-participle stem of inculcāre.  Inculcate is a verb, inculcation & inculcator are nouns, inculcates, inculcating, & inculcated are verbs and inculcative & inculcatory are adjectives; the most common noun plural is inculcations.

Inculcation and inculcators

The word inculcate sits on the spectrum of descriptors of the process by which an individual or institution can attempt impose a doctrine, belief or construct of reality on others, the range extending from suggestion & persuasion to instill, ingrain, propaganda, inculcation & brainwashing.  It thus belongs in the class called loaded words (those which, usually for historic or associative reasons, have come to possess implications “loading” the meaning beyond the technical definition.  For most purposes, those who wish to apply the process of inculcation for some purpose usually cloak their intent with other words; "inspire" often appears in vapid corporate mission-statements but is tainted by its association with advertising and a better choice is the less obviously manipulative "instil".

The classic examples of inculcation are the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century which existed as political entities during the brief few decades when states could (1) control the mass distribution of ideas and information while (2) simultaneously restricting and dissemination of alternatives.  Such states still exist but technological changes have rendered their attempts less effective.  Political and linguistic theorists have developed constructs describing the way by which, even in nominally non-totalitarian states, corporate and political interests can inculcate collective values and opinions.  One celebrated discussion of the process is in Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media (1988) by Noam Chomsky (b 1928; Laureate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Arizona & Institute Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)) and US economist Edward S Herman (1925-2017).

The phrase "the manufacture of consent" had appeared in the book Public Opinion, published in 1922 by US journalist Walter Lippmann (1889–1974), a work which explored the interaction between the mass of the public and the techniques of inculcation used by government (and others) to shape collective opinion and expectation.  Public Opinion remains text useful for its analysis and the structural models presented although now few would (at least publicly) agree with his elitist solutions to the problems identified.  Like Chomsky & Herman’s Manufacturing Consent, it is a helpful reminder that inculcation is a set of techniques not restricted to the totalitarian regimes with which it tends most to be associated.  The message may differ but a hegemony will always attempt to ensure the world view essential to their survival is the one which prevails, the notion of “consent” so important because as British colonial official Thomas Pownall (1722-1805; Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay 1757-1760) repeatedly warned his uncomprehending government during the rumblings which would lead to the American Declaration of Independence: “You may exert power over, but you can never govern an unwilling people.”.  That is something understood, whether by a president in the Oval Office, an ayatollah in his chamber or the führer in his bunker although some accept that if they can’t be governed, they can be suppressed and, as long as the resource allocation remains possible, that can for decades work.

Inculcation begins at school.

The best documented case study in inculcation on a population-wide scale remains that undertaken by the Nazi State (1933-1945) in Germany and many memoirs of era record the way Adolf Hitler (1889-1945; Führer (leader) and German head of government 1933-1945 & head of state 1934-1945) would acknowledge what he’d learned of this from the Roman Catholic Church, even at times admitting it was inevitable the two-thousand year old institution (and their many schools) would still be flourishing in Germany long after he had departed the Earth.  He also understood how critical it was the process began young because it was in school he had been inculcated with the framework on which later he would build his awful intellectual structures.  Social Historian Richard Grunberger (1924-2005) in A Social History of the Third Reich (1971) reported that although Hitler had scant regard for most of his school teachers, he had high regard for his history master, Leopold Pötsch (or Poetsch) (1853–1942), a rabid German Nationalist (like many who lived in Upper Austria).  From Dr Poetsch the future Führer imbibed the heady cocktail of a romanticized tale of Germany from Charlemagne (748–814; (retrospectively) the first Holy Roman Emperor 800-814) to Otto von Bismarck (1815-1989; Chancellor of the German Empire 1871-1890).

In Mein Kampf (My Struggle, 1925), Hitler would write that his favorite teacher: “...used our budding nationalistic fanaticism as a means of educating us, frequently appealing to our sense of national honor. By this alone he was able to discipline us little ruffians more easily than would have been possible by any other means. This teacher made history my favorite subject. And indeed, though he had no such intention, it was then that I became a little revolutionary. For who could have studied German history under such a teacher without becoming an enemy of the state which, through its ruling house, exerted so disastrous an influence on the destinies of the nation? And who could retain his loyalty to a dynasty which in past and present betrayed the needs of the German people again and again for shameless private advantage?”  Upon assuming power in 1933, Hitler almost immediately deployed the education system for the purpose of inculcating the youth with Nazi ideology, the institution ideal for the purpose because it was hierarchical and didactic.  Education in “racial awareness” (the core Nazi tenant) was based on the notion of “racial duty to the national community”, that there were “worthy & unworthy" races” and while it’s misleading to suggest there’s a lineal (and certainly not a planned) path to the Holocaust, the connection must be noted.  If the entire Nazi project of inculcation can be reduced to just two themes, it’s (1) the sense of race struggle and (2) the readiness for the coming war.

Dob & Snitch

Snitch (pronounced snich)

(1) To snatch or steal; pilfer.

(2) To turn informer; tattle.

(3) Among the criminal classes, a slang term for the nose.

(4) A tiny morsel of food (rare).

(5) A ball used in the fictional sport of Quidditch.

1785: The sense of “an informer" was probably from underworld slang meaning "the nose", a use dating from circa 1700, apparently a development of the earlier (1670s) meaning "fillip on the nose"; snitcher in same sense is from 1827.  The alternative etymology suggests a dialectal variant of sneak, perhaps even an imperfect echoic.  Sneak was from the Middle English sniken, from the Old English snīcan (to creep; to crawl).  The meaning "to steal, to pilfer" is attested from 1904 and is possibly a variant of snatch.

The nouns snitcher and snitch are synonymous with informer, other synonyms being blabbermouth, double-crosser, turncoat, sneak, squealer, source, fink, stoolie, betrayer, tattler, snitcher, tattletale, informant, rat, weasel, narc, whistle-blower, tipster, canary & nark although some are more weighted than others in the ways they’re used by the criminal classes.

Dob (pronounced dob)

(1) As the acronym DOB (DoB; D.O.B. etc), date of birth.

(2) In Australian slang, usually as “dob in”, to snitch or inform on someone.

(3) An acronym for many things: Date of Business; Department of Banking; Difficulty of Breathing; Data Object etc.

(4) In Northern Irish slang, to play truant from school.

(5) As dob (do one’s best), the accessory term to dib (from dyb (do your best)) in some of the rituals of the Boy Scout movement.

1950s: The etymology of dob as Australian slang for “to inform upon”; “to report someone’s transgression to the authorities”, is mysterious.  Unlike many forms, it seems to have emerged late, the fist known instance in print being from 1955.  It’s curious because the British dialect dob (to put down an article heavily or clumsily; to throw down; to throw stones at a mark) would doubtless have been known in Australia from the earliest days of white settlement (1788-on) but there’s no obvious connection.  Dictionaries of Australian slang do report other meanings including “to contribute money to a common cause”, and “impose upon someone a responsibility to perform and unwanted or unpopular task”, the former with some relation to the British forms, the latter something of a variation on “dobbing in” in its usual sense.  Also noted is the use in Australian Rules (VFL, ALF etc) football to mean “to kick (the ball) long and accurately; to kick (a goal)”, again with some relation to the British dialectical form relating to the throwing stones or certain actions in the game of marbles.

The etymology of dob in Australia is regarded as unknown.  That dob (meaning a snitch) appears not to have been in use until the 1950s suggests many of the influences on the language which can account for some evolutions or innovations (US English, exposure to foreign languages during wartime) weren’t involved.  Nor was that other profound effect: television, which wasn’t introduced until 1956.  The 1950s was a time of high immigration to Australia, and for the first time by a large number of those for who English wasn’t their first language but no evidence of a connection has ever been offered.  That leaves the British dialectal dob as the likely origin and during the second half of the nineteenth century, the influence of these words on the local dialect was at its greatest so all that is needed to explain it is the etymological missing link.  The was also a historic use for dob as a companion word to dib (the phonetic form of the acronym DYB (do your best)), dob in this context standing for “do one’s best”, the abbreviated dib and dob used in certain chants in the rituals of the Boy Scout movement.  Once seen as an admirable institution to inculcate the values essentials in the development of youth, decades of scandal and critical analysis mean it’s now thought something between quaint and seriously weird.

Mr Abbott was fined Aus$500 after a member of the public informed the police, providing photographic evidence as proof of him out and about in public without a mask, in violation of the rules.  Denying guilt, Mr Abbott claimed he was "well within the law, reasonably interpreted”, although he wasn't going to challenge the fine, not wishing to "waste police time".  He further added he thought the current regime "rather oppressive”.  While not greatly inconvenienced by the Aus$500 fine, Mr Abbott was concerned at the corrosive effect of the laws, saying that he "...never thought dobbing and snitching was part of the Australian character", and that he thought "...as soon as we can leave this health-police state mindset behind us, the better for everyone.”  Even before falling victim to snitchers and dobbers, Mr Abbott had delivered a speech in which he said there were "...aspects of contemporary Australia, which I personally find a little bit unsettling", noting especially "...the readiness of people to dob and snitch on their neighbours worries me a lot, frankly.”  He thought this something like the behavior of those in the former GDR (German Democratic Republic, the old East Germany) who dobbed in fellow citizens to the Stasi, the secret police.

As a victim of the fascist-pig state, Mr Abbott resorted to the dissident's trick of tautology to emphasise his point, "snitch" and "dob" in this context meaning the same thing.  There may be some nuances in that "snitch" probably more overtly reeks of criminality but technically, certainly regarding those reported for flouting public-health regulations, the words are synonymous.  It's not known how many informers the NSW Minister of Heath recruited to his mask-Stasi to dob and snitch on the unmasked but if Mr Abbott is right and it’s something like the Stasi, on the basis of estimates of those used in the GDR, in a state with the population of New South Wales, the number could have been anything between 250,000 and a million.

Dissidents conspire.

Fellow dissident, former deputy prime- minister Barnaby Joyce (b 1967, thrice deputy PM (between various unpleasantnesses) 2016-2022)) was in June fined Aus$200 after he was dobbed-in when masklessly buying fossil-fuel at an Armidale petrol station.  Unlike Mr Abbott, Mr Joyce admitted he was guilty as sin and copped it sweet.

Golgotha

Golgotha (pronounced gol-guh-thuh or gol-goth-uh)

(1) In the Bible’s canonical Gospels, the hill near Jerusalem on which Jesus Christ was crucified; the ancient (and now alternative) name for Calvary.

(2) A place of suffering, sacrifice or martyrdom.

(3) A place of burial (rare and usually without an initial capital).

(4) In eighteenth & nineteenth century Oxbridge slang, rooms of the heads of the colleges (obsolete).

(5) In UK slang, a hat (an allusion to "the place of the skulls" (obsolete)).

(6) A charnel house (an alternative name for a crypt or ossuary).

(7) In the Eastern Orthodox Church, a representation of Christ crucified.

(8) In slang, a crucifix.

1590–1600: From the Late Latin Golgotha, from the Ancient Greek Γολγοθ (Golgothâ) from the Aramaic (Semitic) גּוּלְגּוּלְתָּא‎ (gulgultā) (literally “place of the skull”) and cognate with the Hebrew gulgōleth (skull).  The hill gained the name because its shape was skull-like.  In Dutch the spelling was originally Golgota which influenced use in some early English translations of the Bible.  The use of Calvary to refer to the mount on which Christ was crucified dates from the late fourteenth century.  It was from the Latin Calvariae, Calvariae & Calvaria (related to calvus (bald)), from the Ancient Greek Kraniou topos, a translation of the Aramaic gulgultā and the Old English used Heafodpannan stow as a loan-translation.  Golgotha is a noun and Golgothan is an adjective; the noun plural is Golgothas.

Historians agree Golgotha lay immediately beyond Jerusalem's city walls but there’s no certainty about the exact location although the tradition of pilgrimage has since the early Medieval period focused on the southern chapels of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, probably because the site received the imperial imprimatur within a century of Rome adopting Christianity.  However, speculation has always been encouraged by the apparently contradictory passages in surviving texts which can be interpreted in different ways, thus the suggestions of alternative sites, a matter of some interest to scholars in the field but ignored usually by most of Christendom for whom the Church of the Holy Sepulchre has for so long been a place of veneration.  Beginning in the nineteenth century, there have been archeological excavations but, two-thousand years on, the fragments and remains unearthed have provided only material for speculative interpretation.

The uncertainty about the exact location of Golgotha casts no doubt on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as a historical event, described in the Book of Mark 15:22-27 (King James Version (KJV (1611)):

And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.  And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.  And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.  And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.  And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.  And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.

From what was done of the slopes of Golgotha followed the resurrection, the central event of Christianity and the only vital component for if one accepts the story of the resurrection then Christianity makes sense.  If one’s faith can’t make that leap, Christianity is just another of the competing constructs of moral theology. 

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.  For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.  Wherefore comfort one another with these words.  1 Thessalonians 4: 14-18 (King James Version (KJV (1611)).

Pope John XXIII (1881-1963; pope 1958-1963) spent most of his life as a diplomat, appointed to various posts including as Apostolic Nuncio (ie Ambassador to Turkey) in the Apostolic Delegation to Constantinople.  His most lasting legacy was the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II, 1962-1965, published 1970) and, depending on one’s view, that institution was either a far-sighted achievement or a mistake but either way the Church continues to live with its ripples.  As nuncio, he was ideally suited to diplomatic life of cocktail parties and in Pope John XXIII (2002), Thomas Cahill (1940–2022) recorded: “He was not infrequently seen at diplomatic receptions with a glass of champagne in one hand, sometimes with a cigarette in the other.  At one of these gatherings, he was approached by a woman of considerable décolletage, who wore a large crucifix between her mountainous breasts. 'Quelle Golgothe!' (What a Calvary!) exclaimed the nuncio merrily.  He certainly had a way with words, including when he detected a violation of the Third Commandant.  Cahill recounted that during the redecoration of the Paris nunciature: “…a carpenter who accidentally hit his thumb with a hammer began vigorously to blaspheme.  The nuncio, stern-faced, rose from his desk, walked to the room where the carpenter was working, and demanded: ‘Alors, qu'est-ce que c'est ça? Vous ne pouvez pas dire 'merde' comme tout le monde?” (So, what's this? Can't you say 'shit' like everybody else?).

The crucifix is a symbol of Christendom, and has for two thousand years been one of the most often used motifs in Christian art.  By tradition, the Roman Catholic Church favors the classic image of a cross with Jesus nailed to the structure and it’s often seen among many Protestant denominations whereas others almost exclusively use the cross alone.  Crucifix was from the Middle English crucifix, from the Old French crocefis, from the Latin crucifixus, perfect passive participle of crucifīgō, from crux (wooden frame on which criminals were crucified, especially a cross) + fīgō (to fasten, fix).  The representation of Christ himself on the cross is referred to in English as the corpus, from the Latin corpus (body).

Canada's Golgotha is a sculpture in bronze depicting a Canadian soldier allegedly crucified on a barn door in occupied Belgium, surrounded by the jeering German troops responsible for the atrocity, said to have taken place in 1915.  There was during World War I (1914-1918) an extensive catalogue of atrocity stories including some quite graphical imagery and there were an accepted part of the propaganda efforts on both sides of the conflict but the event carved by Wood was never verified, the contemporary witness statements later discredited.  Immediately after the end of hostilities, the German government objected to the sculpture being put on public display unless documentary evidence could be produced which proved the incident took place.  The Canadian government asserted such evidence was in their hands but declined to furnish copies which provoked further complaints from Berlin and ultimately, the sculpture was withdrawn from the exhibition.  It was kept in storage until 1992 and has since been exhibited though the curators were careful to explain the work was to be treated as an example of Christian art rather than something part of the historic record of war.  That didn’t prevent controversy.

In World War II (1939-1945), controversial too was the event remembered as the Nemmersdorf massacre, a series of atrocities against civilians perpetrated by Red Army soldiers during their advance into East Prussia in October 1944.  The German army swiftly (though temporarily) retook Nemmersdorf and gathered evidence of the violence, including a number of crucified bodies.  The material was passed to Dr Joseph Goebbels (1897-1945; Nazi propaganda minister 1933-1945) and immediately his ministry organized a publicity campaign illustrating this “Bolshevik Barbarism”, intending to inculcate the population with a fanatical desire to resist lest they suffer a similar fate.  One image was of a young girl nailed to a barn door and this was dubbed "Goebbels' Golgotha".  However, there were still memories of the false atrocity stories from the earlier war and the Nazi’s propaganda efforts, increasingly disconnected from reality, had come to be regarded by many as the “fake news” of the day but the civilian population were by now realists and the most notable consequence of the campaign was not a resolve to defend threatened territories but a panicked flood of refugees evacuating the east to trek west.

La Resurrezione (The Resurrection) is a large sculpture in brass & bronze by Italian painter and sculptor Pericle Fazzini (1913–1987), installed in the Paul VI Audience Hall in which straddles the Vatican and the city of Rome.  The work was commissioned in 1965 by Count Enrico Galeazzi-Lisi (1986-1986), an architect whose long relationship with the Holy See began early in the 1930s with his professional association with Eugenio Pacelli (1876-1958) who between 1930-1939 served as Cardinal Secretary of State and his career flourished when the cardinal was in 1939 elected pope, serving as Pius XII until his death in 1958.  The count during the pontificate was appointed Architect of the Holy Apostolic Palaces and General Manager of the Technical and Economic Services.  He was also one of the remarkable number of amateur diplomats who both before and during World War II (1939-1945) acted as quasi-formal conduits between governments (sometimes factions within governments), Galeazzi operating as an emissary between between the Vatican and the US.  His career in the service of the Holy See ended more happily than his half-brother Riccardo Galeazzi-Lisi (1891–1968), a physician who served as Pius XII's personal physician from 1939 until his abrupt dismissal in 1958, immediately after the pontiff’s death.  The doctor’s conduct after the death created a scandal and the cardinals, assembled for the conclave to elect a successor, demanded his resignation, banning him for life from the sovereign state of Vatican City.

The theme of La Resurrezione is one of the resonant concerns of the high Cold War: the fear of those living under the threat of a nuclear armageddon and it depicts Jesus Christ rising, among twisted knots of dismembered hands and skulls, from a nuclear crater in the Garden of Gethsemane.  The sculpture had a long gestation, the casting in Pistoia’s Michelucci Art Foundry not begun until 1972 with the final details not for almost four years.  It was decided the work should be in honor of the 80th birthday of Paul VI (1897-1978; pope 1963-1978) who on 28 September 1977 unveiled it with a blessing.
